Think Meme: What’s in the Air We Breathe?
Think – “direct one’s mind toward something, use one’s mind actively to form connected ideas” – Oxford Languages
Meme – “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture” – Merriam Webster
I have a new message for 2021 and beyond: Think Air Purifiers. There’s no doubt about it, humans are greatly influenced by what we see. I remember the first time I became aware that the indoor air we breathe might not be pristine. I was a young lad lying on a couch placed near a large solid glass window in my home in sunny Florida. When I looked across the room at a certain angle, there it was, a cloud of tiny particles floating about in the room. That’s when the realization hit me the for the first time. All that dust I cleaned off the coffee table with the can of furniture polish as part of my weekly chores was all this stuff floating about in the air settling on the table. After I rose to my feet the cloud of particles vanished from sight, but I knew it was still there, just not visible. Perception is everything. Much of our lives are spent indoors in the presence of artificial light. The air looks clean, but it’s not. As a result, we often ignore what we don’t see and carry on as if the presence of the unseen doesn’t really matter. However, reality hits us when we get sick from what we breathe. In cases where sickness is chronic, clean air becomes more important to us. When we enter “reaction mode”, we tend to elevate thought around finding a solution to our problems; we “think about it”.
So, what’s in the air we breathe?
Dust, Dirt, Bacteria, Viruses, Allergens, Molds, Pet Dander, Smoke, Pollen, Volatile Organic Compounds, Chemicals, Human Skin...
Think Outside The Box and Inside The Box
It’s generally good to explore creative ideas, to not limit ourselves to convention or tradition, or rules that may not be of use. Why purchase an air purifier when we can invest in more plants that purify the air naturally? Interesting idea. However, there are also advantages to using things that do work and have a proven track record of success. It’s possible to be inside a box that was generated from thinking outside the box. A case in point is air purifier technology. These machines draw air from a given space into the unit and then have it pass through several layers of filtering devices within the unit and then have it recycled and released back into the room, through a vent from the unit, as clean or purified air. What a useful, creative technology. It not only addresses health concerns but can also reduce time spent cleaning in the home. But making use of air purifiers as prophylactics takes a shift in conscious thought. In order to be proactive, we need Think Memes about air purifiers. Perhaps a new clean air think emoji?
Think Like a Monk, Don't Think Dirty…Think Air Purifiers
One suggestion for the upcoming new year is to make having clean air in our homes be A New Year’s Resolution. Why not! We make all kinds of resolutions for each incoming new year and many of them revolve around personal health goals. Given the quality of indoor air has an effect on our health, why not set a goal to prioritize indoor air purification in your home during 2021 so you can measure the difference it makes for yourself. For those of us with the good fortune of not having to battle with such things allergies, asthma, and chemical sensitivities, it's easy to dismiss the fact that the indoor air we breathe may be of poor quality and have long-term negative effects we may not feel at present.
So, for the upcoming year think about air purification as an investment in the health of yourself and your family. The truth is the air we breathe in our homes is full of all types of particulate that is so small and invisible to the eye that makes it easy to overlook. But, it's there, and we should pay attention. In fact, the EPA has stated that the air inside the home may be 2 to 5 times worse than air outside. So, why procrastinate?
