Understanding Austin Air Purifiers
Founded in 1990, Austin Air Purifiers are universally regarded as "reliable", "economical" and "well-built" air purification machines. Throughout the years since, the company has reached several milestones including:
- 2001 - Post 911, Austin Air products are recommended by the Red Cross, FEMA and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to combat the negative health effects of ash, chemicals, VOCs and other miscellaneous airborne particulates released into the air after the attack
- 2002 - Following the Battelle Labs tests, Austin Air is selected by the U. S. government for the largest deployment of air purifiers in the world in order to protect residents of Anniston, Alabama during the elimination of chemical weapons.
- 2010 - Austin Air receives the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board certification for safe ozone emissions.
Austin Air Purifier Clinical Trials
In addition to durability, their effectiveness has been established by multiple Clinical Trials and Academic Studies:
- 2001 - Cincinnati Children’s Hospital tested reduction in asthma symptoms
- 2009 - Johns Hopkins measured the effectiveness of reduction in Nitrogen Dioxide NO2 present in homes with gas stoves
- 2015-2017 - University of Washington tested families with asthmatic children living close to agricultural operations and showed 65% reduction of pollutants in children's bedrooms
Given their proven effectiveness, Austin Air Purifiers have been used to promote clean air in the following additional environments outside of the typical home:
- Long Term Care Homes
- Hospitals
- Medical Facilities
- Dental Offices
- Assisted Living and Group Homes
From a consumer perspective though, (discounting color) they pretty much all look the same. So, how do they differ inside?
Austin Air Purifier Design
The common Austin Air Purifier core filtration design revolves around:
- The same housing, motor, and fan (3 speed control)
- A large particle pre-filter (Stage 1), a medium particle pre-filter (Stage 2), 15 pounds of a granular carbon blend with zeolite (Stage 3), and 60 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA (Stage 4).
The exception to this core design is:
- Austin Air Allergy - Forgoes the granular carbon and opts for a final Military-Grade Carbon Cloth wrapper around the HEPA filter which is dedicated solely to gas adsorption, enabling the activated carbon to be more efficient, and designed to handle contaminants in the presence of chemical or biological attacks.
The "Cadillac" model that also utilizes this core design is:
- Austin Air Bedroom - Maintains the core filtration design and adds the Military-Grade Carbon Cloth wrapper around the HEPA filter which offer an additional 5th Stage of filtration.
Model | Granular Carbon Mix | HEPA Type |
None
|
True Medical Grade Military Carbon Cloth or HEGA |

True Medical Grade | |
15lbs Granular Carbon Zeolite Potassium Iodide |

Apart from a separate pre-filter, the remaining activated carbon and HEPA filtration system is a single integrated piece that typically is replaced about every 5 years. The machines with the common core filtration design obviously tackle common environmental household concerns such as allergies, asthma, odors, gases and chemicals. The HealthMate Plus, with the addition of Potassium Iodide, allows for the removal of Formaldehyde, Benzene, & other Toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Whereas, the Bedroom Machine, adds an additional 5th stage HEGA (High Efficiency Gas Absorption) to capture even nano-sized particles.
